South Park and SOMA ‹
Truth and fiction to be explored March 10
The story goes that Englishman George Gordon was an illegitimate descendent
of poet Lord Byron, but his family disowned him when he got drunk and
married a barmaid. She got so angry at his family1s snub she put gin in
their baby1s milk ‹ and their daughter later became an alcoholic.
But none of that is true.
The truth, says S.F. historian Charles Fracchia, is 3there is a certain
amount of romance about South Park, where Gordon became the developer in
the1850s.2
South Park, part of the South of Market area, 3became a down-at-the-heels
section in the 1870s and Œ80s with working class, tenement conditions. Lots
of residents called themselves ŒSouth of the Slot people,12 notes Fracchia..
The district is modeled after the squares in London, he elaborates, and 3is
an unusual configuration. I like the entire area and the interesting
characters I knew when I was growing up.2
Fracchia, who founded the San Francisco Historical Society and teaches at
both City College of San Francisco and the University of San Francisco, will
talk about the truths and the myths of 3Our First Fancy Neighborhoods, South
Park, Rincon Hill and SOMA2 at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 10 Jewish Community
Center, 3200 California St. at Presidio.
A 7 p.m. reception will precede the lecture, sponsored by the San Francisco
Museum and Historical Society.
The historian also will lead a walk of the South Park-SOMA area from 10 a.m..
to 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 14. An optional lunch at the historic
Palace Hotel, with reservations, is available.

A shining beacon in the increasingly bloated, expensive and impossible to navigate
worlds of the industry’s more established multi-day music festivals (SXSW, CMJ,
Coachella, Bonarroo, etc), The Valley of the Vapors Independent Music Festival (VOV)
is gearing up for its 5th and biggest year yet, with bands traveling from as far
away as Australia, Canada, Israel, New York, California and all points in between to
play the fest’s small venue, which is situated in the middle of gorgeous Hot Springs
National Park. These bands make up the fabric of a global community of DIYsters, as
well as the many dedicated sponsors and volunteers that have helped the VOV fest (a
501c3 public charity) produce original, forward-thinking and independent music
events in the small town of Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas since 2005.
In four short years, The VOV has hosted nearly 700 cutting edge, internationally
touring artists who have performed to a combined audience of about 7,000 music
lovers over the course of 6 festivals. The 5th Annual VOV will be held in March
2009 and is the perfect pit stop to bands and fans alike who are traveling to or
from SXSW. They are doing really important, cool work, and are offering a great
experience for the worldwide music community, both for performers and attendees.

singer, Jay Lyon, is also currently featured as Whitney Port's love interest on
MTV's 'The City'.

Dear friends,
This week my new book was released: Meltdown: A Free-Market Look at Why the
Stock Market Collapsed, the Economy Tanked, and Government Bailouts Will
Make Things Worse. So far it's been fluctuating between the second- and
third-bestselling nonfiction book on Amazon.
My hope is that it might inject some sanity into the economic discussion at
a time when the lunatics are running the asylum. Read a free chapter of the
book at http://www.meltdownthebook.com/
Also, take a look at my newly redesigned website:

improvement over my earlier site.
Hope you enjoy Meltdown!

From the Sacramento Theatre Company: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) is an irreverent and fast-paced romp where three actors perform all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays in less then 2 hours! It was London's longest-running comedy, praised by the Los Angeles Times as "wildly funny" and by the Montreal Gazette as "the funniest show you are likely to see in your entire lifetime". If you like Shakespeare, you'll like this show...and if you hate Shakespeare, you'll LOVE this show! (This production will replace Lysistrata for the following dates: 3/11 to 4/5.)
